Freedom of artistic expression is a fundamental human right and an indicator of a healthy and free society. But artistic freedom is under assault: autocratic regimes fear artists because they express cultural identity, advance new ideas, promote dialogue, and bear witness to inhumanity.

The Fair Cobalt Alliance, created in August 2020, is an action platform initiated to coordinate, support and scale local initiatives aimed at the betterment of the ASM sector in line with four distinct workstreams:

1. Enabling safe and dignified working conditions

2. Child labour remediation

3. Raising worker incomes

4. Achieving market acceptance of Fair ASM Cobalt

Current ASM cobalt practices do not always meet the expectations of international supply chain actors and are often characterised by hazardous working conditions, systemic child labour, and limited access to legitimate, transparent markets. Downstream disengagement from or a ban of ASM sites does not constructively address the issues leading to child labour and hazardous working conditions.

The FCA achieves its objectives by leveraging the resources and expertise of stakeholders along the cobalt supply chain. These actors recognise the development potential of artisanal cobalt mining operations as a legitimate economic activity that contributes to the local economy and provides direct and indirect livelihoods for thousands of people in the DRC. The FCA currently partners with an artisanal cobalt cooperative in Kamilombe, CMDS, with the ambition to expand to more mine sites in the future.

The multi-stakeholder initiative has a growing membership of 20+ members. It encompasses, among others, large-scale mining organisations such as CMOC and Glencore, battery manufacturers such as Britishvolt and LG Energy Solutions and electronics manufacturers such as Fairphone. The FCA also welcomes non-supply chain organisations as part of their membership, including international NGOs such as Save the Children and The Centre for Child Rights and Business and industry associations such as the Responsible Cobalt Initiative (RCI).

The FCA is governed by and subject to the oversight of a Steering Committee, subject to FCA's Articles of Governance and Terms of Reference. The initiative works closely with the DRC's local, provincial, and national governments, with an active local office in Kolwezi and national representation in Lubumbashi.

Co-founded in 2018 by TDi Sustainability and Fairphone, The Impact Facility (TIF) is a UK-based social enterprise and impact investment fund with a growing footprint in East and Central Africa. 1. Technical experts: To accelerate continuous ESG improvements and business literacy, mine operators are supported by TIF's network of in-house and external project finance, mining, and environmental experts.

2. Downstream demand: Minerals originating from TIF's partner mines are marketed as ESG-assured status and channelled into global supply chains.

3. Financing: for small-scale mine operators from impact investors that is managed by the TIF team and allocated to modern technology and equipment focusing on:

• Clean energy adoption: to support the transition to climate-smart mining

• Biodiversity protection: through the elimination of toxic chemical use

• Increased value retention: by optimizing mine production and processing

The Impact Facility is also one of the founding members of the FCA, a multi-stakeholder action platform with 20+ members enabling responsible artisanal mining in the cobalt sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The OPTF is a not-for-profit which supports and builds secure, privacy-enhancing technologies such as the Session messaging app. We also conduct research to inform the civil society community about emerging and ongoing issues in the digital rights space, as well as conducting outreach and education initiatives to support people and organisations to better understand, use, and implement secure and privacy technologies. Presentación del Instituto de Ingeniería Matemática y Computacional:

El Instituto de Ingeniería Matemática y Computacional (IMC) de la Universidad Católica, dirigido actualmente por el profesor Pablo Barceló, es una iniciativa interdisciplinaria de la Facultad de Matemáticas UC y la Escuela de Ingeniería UC. A pesar de que el IMC fue creado formalmente en abril de 2018, el proyecto que le da forma comenzó a ser desarrollado en 2015 por equipos académicos de ambos estamentos.

La creación del IMC concretó un largo anhelo de la Escuela de Ingeniería y la Facultad de Matemáticas, en pos de desarrollar los siguientes elementos de interés estratégico para la Universidad Católica.

• Investigación interdisciplinaria y fundamental en las áreas de (a) cómputo científico y análisis numérico, (b) algoritmos, combinatoria y optimización, y (c) aprendizaje estadístico y ciencia de datos.

• Educación interdisciplinaria de pregrado, postgrado y profesional, en las áreas antes mencionadas.

• Difusión y transferencia de avances en aspectos de su quehacer a la comunidad universitaria y la sociedad.

En estos cuatro primeros años de existencia, el IMC ha logrado consolidarse como un proyecto relevante para la UC y el país, al servir como nodo articulador sobre el cual se han podido desarrollar varias iniciativas innovadoras en docencia, investigación y transferencia. Algunos de los logros más notables en estos cuatro años incluyen la formación de una planta académica de primer nivel en distintas áreas de la matemática aplicada, la creación de dos programas de pregrado (Ingeniería Matemática y Licenciatura en Ingeniería en Ciencia de Datos), el diseño de uno de postgrado (Magíster en Ingeniería Matemática y Computacional), la articulación de programas de educación continua en temas de ciencias de datos e inteligencia artificial dentro de la UC, y la adjudicación y ejecución de diversos proyectos de investigación de mucha visibilidad dentro del sistema establecido por la Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID).

Ese último avance ha permitido que hoy los académicos del IMC participen activamente en iniciativas como el Instituto Milenio en Ingeniería e Inteligencia Artificial para la Salud (iHEALTH), el Instituto Milenio Fundamentos de los Datos (IMFD), el Núcleo Milenio para Aplicaciones de Control y Problemas Inversos (ACIP) y el Centro Nacional de Inteligencia Artificial (CENIA).

UC Institute of Applied Ethics

The UC Institute of Applied Ethics was created as an academic unit in 2022. Since 2018, the University authorities worked on the project of the UC Institute of Applied Ethics, considering it a necessary initiative due to the diversity and complexity of the ethical problems that arise in relation to, for example, climate change, the world of business and enterprise, the distribution of wealth, communications, technology, the relationship with animals, etc. In this sense, the UC seeks to prioritize training in the habit of ethical discernment, for both professional and citizens, whilst contributing to the public discussion in matters of applied ethics.

IEA, is an interdisciplinary academic unit for teaching, research and outreach. The Institute belongs to the 18 faculties of the University, the College UC and the Villarrica Campus. Our purpose is to address, from our Catholic identity, the ethical conflicts of this time, considering different areas of knowledge, and in contact with the experience of different actors in society.
